The Peach Blossom Spring
To the east of the Tiao Xi River, there is a stretch of over fifty miles where people compete in boat races. This place is called Peach Blossom Mountain, with a small opening like a glowing light. People leave their boats and enter through the opening. At first, it is very narrow, barely allowing a person to pass. But after a few dozen steps, it suddenly becomes clear and open. The land is flat with houses and children, their expressions bright and their clothing elegant. There are fertile fields, beautiful ponds, and mulberry trees and bamboo. The paths intersect and the sounds of chickens and dogs are heard. People come and go, farming and working, and the men and women dress like outsiders. The young and old, with their yellow and flowing hair, are joyful and content.
Everyone here takes care of their own fields and houses. Men, women, young and old, all live harmoniously. When there are guests, they send someone to bring them news. Outside is Dongting Lake, and within there are five hills, all resembling human faces. They surround the area and form a capital city. The people of this place have their own affairs, and there is nothing to be reported. The southern mountains face north, with steep slopes. Entering within, there are many dangers and obstacles, with winding paths for over ten miles. In the middle, there is no large open space, only a few dozen steps wide. Between the southern mountains and the northern ponds, there are many mulberry trees for clothing and edible plants without any fuzz. They have everything they need.
