During the time of King Huai of Chu and Qu Yuan, it was the era of the Warring States. The power of the states of Qin and Jin, who rose to compete for supremacy among the feudal lords, was not far off. Although Qu Yuan respected and valued the virtuous and talented, and focused solely on state affairs, why did he still fall prey to treachery? It was because his courtiers monopolized power and pursued their own ambitions, using up all their energy to establish their own reputation. They followed the foolish advice of the time, serving the king day and night, praising or criticizing others. They made thorough preparations before making plans, which could not be easily summarized.
